Hey,

I've heard a lot of people using household materials on their trombones instead of the overpriced junk music stores sell.  While the stuff is good, there are some cheaper alternatives that will make playing the trombone all the more sweeter.

Cheers,

For the slide:

Pond's Cold Cream. As with most slide lubricant, a little dab'll do ya!
Travel spray bottles that you can find in Target's travel size products section. Although the trombone spray bottle that most retailers sell is fashionable and witty, this alternative is a might cheaper and has excellent misting action.

For the tuning slide:

Chapstick -- the stick kind. I use an old lip balm tube from the 80's and it keeps the slide slick enough to push in or out easily and lasts for months and months. Use the non-medicated kind if possible.

For tarnished mouthpieces -- or any silver for that matter:

Why use silver polish when you can use toothpaste (preferably white)? Just take a dab on the end of a Q-Tip and rub on the mouthpiece in tiny circles. Voila! Shiny and fresh.

For disinfecting mouthpieces in a classroom:

Get the green alcohol from a Dollar Tree store or Longs or wherever. Put the liquid in one of those spray bottles from Target and spritz onto whatever surface needs disinfecting.

For the pesky problem of leaky waterkeys:

Use a dollar (anything larger and you might find it difficult to play with all those hands getting in the way) to stop it up. Fold it and stick it between the cork and the hole. Should work for the rehearsal and afterwards, you can use it to buy a sodey-pop.

Any other suggestions? Post it in the forum or send me an email directly: dgoddess_1999@yahoo.com
